A Lesson in Quiet Excellence, entering 2026

I was at a party of professionals which involved networking, activities and good food and drink. As I settled in to enjoy the delicious meal—particularly the mutton biryani—I witnessed something that has stayed with me.

The steward approached the staff clearing the bin of used plates and instructed them to check carefully, certain that a spoon had been accidentally discarded. The staff member looked skeptical, but the steward was insistent. Sure enough, four plates down, they retrieved a perfectly good spoon that would have otherwise ended up in the garbage.

Impressed by his vigilance, I asked how he had noticed this while also serving the guests. He explained that he'd observed a guest inadvertently drop it while stacking their plate—it happened quickly, and the guest hadn't even realized. Rather than let it pass, he made sure to retrieve it.

I commended him for his sense of ownership and alertness. Here was someone who wasn't just performing his assigned duties—he was actively present, observant of his surroundings, and genuinely invested in protecting his employer's resources. He demonstrated that quiet excellence which is required of all professionals: taking care of the small things even when no one is watching.

As we step into 2026, let's continue to contribute with integrity and care, especially when no one is watching. The Scriptures remind us: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters" (Colossians 3:23-24). True professionalism isn't about grand gestures—it's woven into the fabric of small, mindful actions taken throughout the day.

As Proverbs affirms, "Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings" (Proverbs 22:29). May we each embody this faithfulness in the year ahead.

Wishing you and your loved ones the very best for the New Year.

God’s First Blessings: Space, Humanity, and Time

We find the first three blessings from God in Genesis Chapters 1 and 2. God blessed all Space, Humanity, and Time.

God created the Heavens and the Earth in Genesis. The first blessings from God are listed in Chapters 1 and 2.

  1. The First Blessing – Creatures of Sea and Air: Genesis 1:22 – “And God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.’” This blessing ensures creatures flourish, providing sustenance for humanity.
  2. The Second Blessing – Humanity: Genesis 1:28 – “And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’” This blessing comes with the responsibility to care for creatures and creation.
  3. The Third Blessing – Time: Genesis 2:3 – “So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.” The seventh day is sanctified for rest and reflection.

Reflections on the Blessings

  • Space: The blessing to creatures of sea and air to “be fruitful and multiply” fills the earth with abundance, ensuring humanity has enough for sustenance.
  • Humanity: We are uniquely created in God’s image. As Matthew Henry notes, “Man was not made in the likeness of any creature that went before him, but in the likeness of his Creator.  But the soul of man specially bears God’s image.” This is  a blessing not explicitly stated but inferred. This gift carries the duty to steward Space wisely.
  • Time: God blesses the seventh day and makes it holy. In our era of 24/7 facilities, offices, and entertainment, this sacred time calls us to have fellowship with God,  reflect on the past week’s achievements with gratitude, and in case of failures, to plan differently for the coming week.

How Can Humanity Be Fruitful?

Since our souls are in God’s image, our fruitfulness reflects the Fruits of the Spirit: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23) For both creatures and humanity, the blessing is to be fruitful. Are we able to channel this blessing to cultivate these spiritual fruits?

Our Responsibility

Blessed with Space, Time, and God’s image, humanity is called to be a blessing to others. By embodying the Fruits of the Spirit, we fulfill our divine purpose, caring for Space and fostering love, joy, and peace in our communities.  Truly Blessed to be a Blessing.
